Issue
The Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations states that “Children have the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated, physically or mentally.”
For example, children should be protected from becoming the victims of child labor, human trafficking, sex slaves or victims of sexual harassment. Despite this, the trend of child sexual abuse in Thailand is increasing every year.
In 2013, there were a total of 31,966 women and children who were physically and/or sexually abused in Thailand. The main problem among children age 10-15 year old is sexual abuse. The abuser is usually an acquaintance whom the child trusts. This means there is more opportunity for abuse. The effect of the sexual abuse on young girls is both physical and mental. This gives rise to unwanted pregnancies, of which the teenage mother is becoming alarmingly younger.
