About The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation (QSCBC)
QSCBC, under Her royal patronage Queen Sirikit and organized by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kris Chatamra, aims to become a world class breast Cancer Center in the heart of Thailand. The main current focus is the optimization of the center into a fully functional cancer facility that can prevent and cure any and all forms of breast cancer.
The issue
Presently, according to numerous medical reports conducted in Thailand, the number one cause of death among Thai women is Breast Cancer. During their lifespan, at least 1 in every 10 women will have breast cancer, with more than half of the recorded patients being underprivileged women with little to no access to quality medical care. Early detection is the easiest way to ensuring a high survival rate for these women; as such, this is the foundation’s prime focus.
The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation firstly identifies the main cause for concern in the local slum communities, whether it be education or early detection, and then utilises this information to launch a campaign on that specific area whilst providing medical services. The project concurrently aids in educational programs and offers free cancer tests.
How does the project address the issue?
• Since 2005, events have been regularly held in slums for education, diagnosing, providing medication, and curing breast cancer. Events are held twice a year over two days and bring quality health care directly to them, and with costs covered for transportation, it alleviates any concerns of money. Target groups are selected each year with the central goal being in accordance with the organisation’s two objectives.
• To educate women in slums about the importance of routine annual cancer check-ups.
• To provide free access for the impoverished people residing in the slums. This solution effectively reduces the number of patients requiring long-term treatment and eliminates any barriers to receiving quality health care.
